Courses & Training: Laboratory Educational Kits and Training Courses for New Energy studies
The working principle of a fuel cell involves the direct conversion of chemical energy from the reaction between a fuel and an oxidant into electrical energy, bypassing intermediate conversion into heat or mechanical energy.

An SOFC consists of gas-permeable electrodes — an anode and a cathode — separated by a gastight solid oxide electrolyte. Syngas (H₂ + CO), generated from the primary fuel in a catalytic reformer located inside the electrochemical generator, is supplied to the anode, while the oxidant (air) is delivered to the cathode. At the same time, the charged ions (O²⁻) formed at the electrodes migrate through the ion-conducting electrolyte membrane from the cathode side, while the products of the chemical oxidation reaction of syngas at the anode side are water and carbon dioxide.

Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFCs) offer high efficiency and can operate not only on hydrogen but also on hydrocarbon-based fuels.

Stability
The electrical efficiency of SOFCs is at least twice that of conventional engine-driven generator systems.
The generator internally reforms organic fuel into syngas, enabling highly efficient power generation. It can also run on pure hydrogen for zero-emission operation. When using liquid fuel, the system achieves a record-breaking specific energy density of up to 3,000 Wh/kg—more than 10 times higher than lithium-ion batteries of equivalent weight.
The electrochemical reactions in SOFCs generate heat as a byproduct. This heat helps maintain stable operation of the generator's internal components. Additionally, the thermal energy can be utilized to keep user equipment or batteries warm in subzero temperature conditions.
SOFC-based electrochemical generators function as continuous chemical current sources, operating indefinitely with a constant supply of air and fuel.
